Astonishingly, Alessandra Biaggi Earns Pelham Democratic Committee's Endorsement For State Senate District 34
Democratic State Senate candidate Alessandra Biaggi won the endorsement of the Pelham Democratic Committee during their meeting Thursday night at Pelham Village Hall.
In a major shift, the Democratic Committee overwhelmingly chose Biaggi over the District 34 incumbent, Jeff Klein, despite having supported him in all of his prior elections, including his last competitive primary in 2014.
Biaggi will face Klein in the Democratic Primary Election on Thursday, Sept 13th. The town’s District Leaders, who each represent about 400 Democratic voters, are also up for reelection on September 13th.
“I’m thrilled to have the support of the Pelham Democratic Committee,” Biaggi said. “Their vote last night mirrors what we’re hearing in neighborhoods throughout the Bronx and Westchester. Democrats are eager for a true-blue Democratic State Senate—one that will protect women’s reproductive freedom, guarantee full funding for our public schools, and stand up for tenant rights and single-payer health care.”
Klein, Biaggi’s opponent, is under increasing pressure from grassroots Democrats for enabling Republican control of the State Senate for the past seven years. In 2011, Klein split from the Democratic conference to form the IDC, a group of eight rogue Democratic State Senators who caucused with the Republican Conference. and supported Republican leadership of the body.
"Biaggi has a fraction of Klein's resources," Village of Pelham District Leader Marilyn Zielinski mused, "but she has proven herself to be an effective challenger and she won me over as she is winning constituents."
Biaggi attended Prospect Hill, Pelham Middle School, and Pelham Memorial High School ('04), before graduating with honors from New York University. After graduating from Fordham Law School cum laude, she worked as a Legal Fellow at the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal. Following the devastating impact of Superstorm Sandy she served as Assistant General Counsel in the NYS Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, as counsel to the Small Business, Infrastructure, and Community Reconstruction programs. She then worked on Secretary Clinton’s 2016 President Campaign, serving as Deputy National Operations Director where she managed a $500 million budget and operations for voter contact efforts nationwide. Prior to launching her campaign, she served in the Governor’s Counsel’s Office, where she worked on women’s issues.
"I'm proud to support Alessandra Biaggi," said Hanan Kamal Eldahry, District Leader and Village of Pelham Trustee. "She represents the type of leadership New York State deserves. She has the focus and the determination to win and she clearly realizes that the role of elected officials is to serve their constituents rather than themselves."
Longtime Pelham Manor trustee Toby Marxuach-Gusciora added, "Jeff Klein has made sure that important bills do not reach the Senate floor. Alessandra Biaggi will fight to pass those bills, which are important to New Yorkers. I strongly believe she is the best person to represent us in Albany and that she will fight for all of the people of District 34 because she does not take "no" for an answer." In 2014, Klein lost Pelham Manor to Oliver Koppell, 41%-59%.
"It's wonderful to see Pelham coming together to support one of their own," said Eldar Shuminov, Secretary, Town of Pelham Democratic Committee. "I'm looking forward to having a real Democrat representing us in Albany!"
