Alessandra Biaggi endorsed by People for Bernie
The People for Bernie – a grassroots movement with nearly 1.5 million social media followers – today announced its endorsement of Alessandra Biaggi for the New York State Senate.
Biaggi is challenging District 34 incumbent Jeff Klein in the Democratic Primary Election on Thursday, Sept. 13.
Klein formed a breakaway group of senators seven years ago that allowed the Republican minority to control the State Senate. He is widely criticized by progressive Democrats who blame him and his group for blocking more than two dozen bills that were passed by the Democratic-led Assembly.
Biaggi, an attorney, brings extensive experience in the state capital to her bid for a Senate seat. She served the Cuomo administration in the Counsel’s office, developing key legislation; worked as a legal fellow for New York Homes and Community Renewal, and was a leader in the governor’s office of Storm Recovery, helping to rebuild regional homes and businesses after Hurricane Sandy.
“I’m thrilled to be supported by The People for Bernie,” Biaggi said. “Not only do we have a shared vision for the future – the organization and our campaign are both built on grassroots ‘people power.’”
“We are enthusiastically endorsing Alessandra,” said Kat Brezler, co-founder of The People for Bernie. “Biaggi has been knocking all the doors in the District where grew up. This is the work it takes to win election - not backroom deals that have been the cornerstone of her opponent’s process.
“She believes in what we at The People for Bernie do: Health care is a human right, you must free the people and make cannabis legal, and we must abolish APPR (the teacher evaluation system).”
Biaggi has already been endorsed by more than five dozen activist groups, including the Working Families Party – which ensures that Biaggi will be on the ballot in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 6th.
The People for Bernie was founded in 2015 to support the presidential bid of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont).
