Congressman Charles Rangel Endorses Democrat Alessandra Biaggi For State Senate, Criticizes Jeff Klein For Empowering Republicans In Albany
Charles B. Rangel, longtime dean of New York’s Congressional delegation, today announced his endorsement of Democrat Alessandra Biaggi for New York State Senate and sharply criticized incumbent Senator Jeff Klein for enabling Republican control of the State Senate for years.
“In 2013, Senator Klein had the chance to join his Democratic colleagues and make Andrea Stewart-Cousins the first African-American woman to serve as Senate Majority Leader,” Rangel said. “Instead, he voted for a Republican, Dean Skelos, to be the Senate’s leader—a choice directly responsible for the last five years of a Republican-controlled Senate, blocking progressive goals like the Dream Act, the Reproductive Health Act, and fair funding of our public schools.
“To now hear Senator Klein talk about ‘Democratic unity’ -- after years of betraying Democratic priorities and empowering Republicans -- is frankly ludicrous and outrageous.”
“I’m proud to endorse Alessandra Biaggi for State Senate,” Rangel said. “She will bring to the Senate new energy, valuable experience, and a strong commitment to the Democratic Party and its values. And I know that she will never vote for a Republican to lead it — not once, not ever. I urge all of my friends in the Bronx and Westchester to join me in supporting her on Thursday, September 13th."
In accepting the endorsement, Biaggi said: “It is such an honor to have the support of Congressman Rangel. For so many years, New Yorkers had no more powerful voice in Washington than his. Congressman Rangel has championed countless causes that are important to me — from civil rights to workers’ rights to access to health care and economic justice. I look forward to leading those fights in the State Senate as part of a true-blue Democratic majority.
“This is an exciting day for me,” Biaggi added, “and a major boost for our campaign as we continue to grow and gain momentum.”
Biaggi has been endorsed by nearly 70 political leaders and citizen action groups, including former New York State Attorney General G, Oliver Koppell and the Town of Pelham Democratic Committee. She has already secured the Working Families Party ballot line for the general election in November.
Alessandra Biaggi was Deputy National Operations Director of the 2016 Hillary Clinton presidential campaign. She is an attorney and served Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration in the counsel’s office, focused on health and women’s issues. She also worked as a leader in the New York State Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, helping to rebuild regional homes and businesses after Hurricane Sandy.
Biaggi grew up in the 34th Senate District, which includes parts of the Bronx and Westchester County, and graduated from local public schools. This is her first campaign for public office.
